Ci sono stati molti re e regine collegati al castello di Stirling, il re Alessandro I morì nel 1124 e il re Davide I usò il castello come residenza reale. Giacomo VI è cresciuto nel castello di Stirling e suo figlio Henry è nato qui nel 1594.
Il castello di Stirling era una residenza reale dal tempo di David I (1124)
fino a quando Giacomo VI fu incoronato re d'Inghilterra e di Scozia nel 1603. Si trasferì poi a Londra.
Il castello di Stirling è il miglior esempio di come sarebbero gli interni di un castello del XVI secolo.
Il Castello di Stirling Scozia come Castello di Edimburgo in Scozia sorge su una roccia vulcanica che domina la città .
Anche l'incoronazione di Maria Regina di Scozia fu eseguita nella Cappella Reale del Castello di Stirling nel 1543.

Il ponte levatoio è l'ingresso al castello di Stirling attraverso un fossato che proteggeva le mura esterne del castello dall'essere scalato il ponte sarebbe stato mobile ma ora è in pietra e legno costruito intorno al 1714.

Il centro della Gate House dei lavori preliminari con un'estremità dei lavori preliminari è la Torre di Elphinstone che si trova ancora come si trovava intorno al 1500. L'altra estremità era la Torre dei Principi di cui rimane molto poco. Si diceva che fosse usato come asilo nido per i reali di Scozia.

La vista sotto è il modo in cui la Grande Batteria si affacciava proteggendo l'ingresso del castello e l'Old Stirling Bridge dove William Wallace sconfisse gli inglesi nel 1297.
Lo sperone francese

Re Enrico II di Francia, suocero di Maria Regina di Scozia, aiuta a tenere gli inglesi fuori dalla Scozia. I francesi occuparono Stirling e costruirono lo sperone noto come sperone francese intorno al 1554. La fortificazione con 11 cannoni proteggeva l'ingresso al castello e il vecchio ponte di Stirling sul Forth.
Casa di guardia

La casa di guardia principale all'ingresso del castello di Stirling fu costruita nel 1790 e veniva utilizzata per mantenere l'ordine nella guarnigione del castello.​ La seconda casa di guardia doveva vegliare sulle polveriere, intorno al 1850 questa fu convertita in celle per mantenere l'ordine all'interno della Guarnigione.

La casa del Conestabile del Castello quando i reali non erano in residenza. e si dice che sia ossessionato da molte cose strane che vengono riportate quando nessuno è presente. Questo è l'edificio originale del 1505.

Questa era un'area per il riposo e i bambini per giocare e in seguito era un campo da bocce. Probabilmente è un posto dove pagavano il calcio poiché il pallone da calcio più antico è stato trovato nel palazzo nel 1510 circa. Il pallone era fatto di pelle e vescica di maiale. Il Palazzo Reale e la Prince's Walk si affacciano sul Queen Anne's Garden.

La Great Hall era una sala per banchetti costruita per Giacomo IV nel 1503 ed è la più grande del suo genere costruita in Scozia. Utilizzato per cerimonie e rievocazioni storiche e una volta per una riunione del Parlamento. Una volta che i reali si trasferirono a Londra, cadde in disuso. La Great Hall è stata rinnovata e riportata al suo splendore originale e inaugurata nel 1999 dalla regina Elisabetta II che ha impiegato oltre 20 anni per ricreare.

Il forte maggiore era il 3° classificato nella guarnigione, la casa fu costruita intorno al 1790 quando c'erano circa 800 uomini basati al castello
La fossa dei Leoni

La tana del leone del castello di Stirling è il luogo in cui molti re tenevano i loro leoni. Davide II e Giacomo III avevano entrambi un leone e Giacomo II aveva una leonessa e Giacomo Vi aveva tre leoni.
Grande batteria

La Grand Battery fu costruita nel 1698, ma fu usata solo una volta contro
i giacobiti e Bonnie Prince Charlie nel 1746.
Batteria a tre pistole

La batteria dei tre cannoni sorge sui resti della Torre di Elphinstone parte del Forework (mura del castello) La torre costruita intorno al 1510, La torre fu bombardata dalle truppe inglesi nel 1651 e ridotta in macerie. Nel 1689 fu trasformato in quella che è una batteria scarica.

Questo balcone noto come Lookout della Signora si affacciava sull'area della giostra e offre una splendida vista sui nodi del re e della regina. Qui è dove la Regina con le sue dame di compagnia vegliava sui Cavalieri mentre si sfidavano nella giostra.

I nodi del re e della regina sono tumuli nei giardini originali costruiti intorno al 1265 per Alessandro III. I nodi sono disegni aggiunti a una vecchia struttura da giardino. Ci sono molte teorie sulla zona e su Knot alcune delle quali sono legate a Re Artù e alla tavola rotonda.

La Porta Nord è la parte più antica del Castello di Stirling.
Il passaggio a volta aveva una volta un cancello Portcullis e cucine sopra di esso. A destra del cancello ci sono i gradini per la zona cucina (vedi sotto).
Grandi cucine

Le Cucine furono costruite da Giacomo IV intorno al 1510 poiché era abituato ad avere grandi raduni e Banchetti.
Quando la corte del re si trasferì al castello di Stirling nel 1543,
19 carrozze sono state utilizzate per spostare la dispensa, il vino e gli utensili nella zona cucina.

La Postern Gate fu costruita nel muro del castello ed era un accesso dentro e fuori il castello per le Gowane Hills, la porta fu bloccata nel 1689

Il Nether Bailey era un'area chiusa dove c'erano i magazzini, i canili, la polveriera e le officine. In fondo al castello c'era anche una porta che fu chiusa nel 1689.

Le Polveri furono costruite nel 1810 per immagazzinare la polvere da sparo per le truppe la Polveriera fu costruita nel punto più lontano dalle caserme e dagli antichi edifici del Castello.

Stirling Castle
James V Palace at Stirling Castle was built to accommodate the new Queen in the style of the French as she was accustomed. The project took several years with building starting in 1538 on his return with his new wife Marie de Guise. Mary saw the completion of the Palace as James died in 1542 without seeing the completion.
With six rooms three for the King and three for the Queen. The Bedchamber where they each slept.
The inner chamber where each could give audience to a closer circle of friends, with the outer hall being used for functions and less personal meetings. Mary of Guise became Regent of Scotland on the death of her husband James V taking care of the crown for her daughter who was Mary Queen of Scots.
There has been many alterations to the buildings in the castle over the centuries.
The present castle has many of original buildings from the 16th century.
Prince's Walk

The Prince's Walk overlooks Queen Anne Garden and is accessed from the Princes Tower in James V Palace.
On the walls of the Palace along the Princes walk are four carvings which are of bests and one of the winged Devil.

The King’s Presence Chamber (Inner Hall) was where the original Stirling Heads (wooden carved heads) decorated the ceiling. Taken down circa 1775 the ceiling had circa 100 carved oak heads some are on display in a gallery above the Royal Apartments. There are replica hand carved heads on the ceiling of the Presence (Inner) Chamber.

This was also used as a meeting place but only for close friends and the very important guests. This would have also been a dressing room and for washing with a bed in a connecting area.

Ghostly Hauntings
The Haunting of the castle by the Green Lady is said to be a maid of Mary Queen of Scots who had been seen as a soothsayer and predicted the death of the Queen the next night. The maid stayed awake that night and carried the Queen to safety from a fire, the Queen was saved but the maid died from her wounds she had received in saving the Queen. Thought to be a Harbinger of Doom, dressed in green velvet the maid haunts the the castle. To look into the ghosts eyes could mean certain death.

The Queens Bedchamber decorated in the opulent style of circa 1550. The grand tapestries and large fireplaces, bedding of silk with rich colours. This was her dressing room and bathing room the bed would have been in a smaller area away from all visitors. There is a painting of three birds shot with one arrow which is Mary of Guise signature.

Royal Palace Vaults

The Palace Vaults are found in a passageway under the Royal Palace. Each room (vault) was designated for a different section of the Royal household. There are five areas that give more information with interactive exhibitions for the children. The Musicians Vault – music and instruments of the 16th century The Jester's Vault – jokes games and tricks made for the Royals. The Painter's Vault – what and how colours were made for paints and dyes. The Carvers Vault –tools for the joiners and stonemasons, how they were used to create the wooden panels and stone carvings you can see in the Royal Palace. The Tailor's Vault – all about the clothes, jewellery and cents the Kings and Queens wore.
