Golf has been played in Scotland for at least 700 years.
Golf was banned by James II between 1457 and 1502 when James IV a keen golfer, repealed the ban.
Archbishop John Hamilton in 1552 gave the people of
St Andrews the permission to golf on the links of St Andrews.
The the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, (R&A),
known as the Society of St Andrews Golfers was founded in 1754.
The British Open Golf Championship was first played in 1860 at Prestwick.
The Open Golf Championship was first played on the Old Course at St Andrews in 1873
There has been 24 winners of the Open Championship at St Andrews
In 2022 the Championship will have been played 150 times
